Have a look below or get in touch via comms@baos.org or using any of our social media platforms.
Joining BAOS
Do I need to audition to join BAOS?
No. Anyone can become a member of BAOS. Auditions are only required if you would like to perform in one of our productions. We also welcome members who wish to get involved backstage, front of house, costumes, props, scenery, lighting, sound, administration and many other areas.
I’m new to musical theatre. Can I still join?
Absolutely! BAOS welcomes people of all experience levels. Whether you’ve performed for years or are completely new to theatre, we’d love to hear from you.
Is there an age restriction?
Age requirements may vary depending on the production. Specific casting and audition criteria will always be detailed in the relevant show information and audition packs.
How do I become a member?
Simply visit our Join Us page and get in touch with us. Once you’ve completed your membership registration and paid the applicable membership fee, you’ll be ready to get involved.
Rehearsals
When do rehearsals take place?
Regular rehearsals are typically held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30pm to 10:00pm.
Where are rehearsals held?
Rehearsal venues can vary between productions. Details will always be provided on the relevant production page and in rehearsal communications.
Do I need to attend every rehearsal?
Not necessarily. Rehearsal schedules are planned around the requirements of each production. Cast members will receive detailed rehearsal schedules showing when they are needed.
Auditions
How do auditions work?
Each production has its own audition process. Full details, including audition dates, character information, audition materials and preparation guidance, are provided in the show’s audition pack.
Can I audition for a specific role?
Yes. During the audition process you can indicate roles you are interested in. The creative team will cast roles based on what best serves the production.
What should I prepare for an audition?
Requirements vary by show but may include singing, acting and movement or dance. Audition materials are usually provided in advance.
What happens if I don’t get a principal role?
Many members perform in the ensemble, which is a vital and exciting part of every BAOS production. Ensemble members often sing, dance and appear throughout the show.
Membership and Fees
How much does membership cost?
Current annual membership fees are:
- Main Show Membership: £35 membership fee plus £150 show fee
- Summer Show Membership: £35 membership fee plus £90 show fee
- Non-Performing Membership: £25
Please note that fees are reviewed annually and may change.
Why are there membership and show fees?
Producing quality musical theatre involves significant costs including venue hire, performance rights, costumes, scenery, technical equipment and production materials. Membership and show fees help support these expenses.
Are membership fees refundable?
Membership and show fee policies will be explained at the time of joining. Please contact the committee if you have any questions regarding your circumstances.
Backstage and Volunteering
Do you need backstage volunteers?
Yes! Every production relies on a dedicated team behind the scenes. There are opportunities in scenery construction, painting, props, costumes, make-up, lighting, sound, stage management and more.
I don’t want to perform. Can I still join?
Definitely. Many BAOS members contribute their skills offstage and are an essential part of every production.
Do I need previous backstage experience?
No. Enthusiasm and willingness to help are the most important qualities. Experienced members are always happy to help newcomers learn.
