New Members & Auditions!

Well done to all our new members who auditioned successfully last Thursday, it’s great to see so many new faces!

For anyone else who is still interested in joining for Hairspray, you must attend this Thursday 23rd from 7:30 for our dance audition; this is for both principle and chorus roles. You must also be a member of BAOS!

The Process

If you are not already a member of BAOS (i.e. you have not done a production will us or Limelight previously) you must download and complete a New Members Form (see The Forms below).  Don’t forget that you need to also pay your membership fee (details in the form).

If you are new to BAOS or an existing member you must complete an Audition Form for Hairspray. If you are only interested in a chorus or dance role, that’s fine; you still need to:

  • Complete the Audition Form and return it on or before this Thursday’s dance audition
  • Take part in this Thursday’s dance audition
  • Turn up to the first part of the Sunday 26th audition (approximately 10am – 11am).

Please note that you will not be allowed to audition on Sunday if you are not a member!

The following text is to be published in the Gazette:

‘Mention “Hairspray” the musical and most people will think of Tracey Turnblad, the girl with big hair and an even bigger heart whose one passion is to dance.

But behind the catchy songs and energy-packed dances of this ever popular musical is a serious message about diversity and racial integration in 60s America.  It’s something the producers of the 2015 BAOS (Basingstoke Amateur Operatic Society) production of Hairspray are keeping in mind as they cast their net wide for a cast which will reflect the diversity of the show’s multi-racial characters. There are principal roles for black actors and actresses and plenty of action for both dancers and singers.

Do you have what it takes to be soul singer Motormouth Maybelle, the ultimate party-throwing hostess for the black community? Or her daughter, Lil’ Inez, whom Tracey helps to get her turn in the spotlight and transform a world of closed minds into one where everyone is valued, whatever the colour of their skin – or the size of their hair-do? Or could you take the part of Maybelle’s son, Seaweed J. Stubbs, whose stylish dancing and mega personality act like a magnet on young, impressionable Tracey?

The producers will also be looking to cast a band of sassy singers to form The Dynamites, a group of women vocalists who appear throughout the show.

Other prize parts include Tracey’s parents, the ever-loving Edna and big-hearted Wilbur Turnblad; teen idol Link Larkin; Penny Pingleton who is Tracey’s best friend and biggest supporter; and hit show host Corny Collins  – corny by name and corny by nature. Not forgetting scheming mother and daughter Velma and Amber Von Tussle whose world is about to be challenged by a whole new order of things.

Rehearsals for Hairspray start on Thursday evenings from October 2nd from 7.30 p.m. until 10 p.m. and there will be a dance workshop for all potential cast members on October 23rd. Auditions for the principal parts will be held on Sunday 26th October.  Please get in touch by emailing or visit the website

BAOS will be bringing Hairspray to the stage at the Haymarket Theatre, Basingstoke, in March 2015 and can guarantee a theatrical experience which will be fun from the opening song “Good Morning Baltimore” to the closing number “You Can’t Stop the Beat.”

Can you afford to miss out on being a part of such a great experience?’
