West Side Story – Review

Alan Johns from The Southampton Daily echo kindly attended our press evening on opening night for West Side Story. His review follows:

Basingstoke Amateur Operatic Society
The Haymarket
Tuesday 8th March 2016

Director Richard Cox’s youthful cast delivered a well-acted and particularly well-sung version of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim’s perennial favourite. Based loosely on the theme of Romeo and Juliet, the warring Sharks and Jets form the backdrop to the doomed romance of two star-crossed lovers. Lucy Killick sings beautifully as Maria, maintaining her Puerto Rican accent admirably and Tom McGreavy was a very creditable Tony. The role of Anita is a gift usually bestowed on the most talented female, and so it was here, with Luanssa Goodman outstanding. Connor McGrane (Bernardo) and Ollie Johnson (Riff) did well, but James Davies caught the eye as Action, as did Steve Havercan (Shrank). Musical Director Trevor Defferd’s orchestra was excellent, costumes, sound and lighting were spot-on but Zoe Blackall’s brilliant choreography, with well-staged fight-scenes, was the over-riding memory of this vibrant show. Although, the ensemble’s finale rendition of Somewhere takes some beating. Runs until Saturday.

There are still some tickets available for tonight (Wednesday) and tomorrow night. There is extremely limited availability from Friday onwards. See for more details

Dates announced for Evita!

BAOS Limelight are delighted to have been awarded the license to perform EVITA at Queen Mary’s College, Basingstoke, in October Half Term 2016.

With more than 20 major awards to its credit, and an Oscar winning film version starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita is iconic. Evita charts the story of Eva Peron, wife of former Argentine dictator Juan Peron, from her humble beginnings through to the extraordinary wealth, power and status which ultimately led her to be heralded as the ‘spiritual leader of the nation’.

The issues of how one “helps” the aggressor achieve the desired effect will also be demonstrated. There will be ample opportunities at every stage for all students involved to take part and practice techniques and at all times, the issue of everyone’s safety will be stressed and redressed.  Knife fighting will also be covered in the workshop.
